I was catching up on Kirsten Osolind’s re:invention blog today (it’s one of the best I’ve seen for women entrepreneurs). The June 19th entry "Brand Courtship & the Excellent Women’s Club (EWC): The Top 10 Ways to Attract a Woman, Make Her Fall in Love, and Stay in Love with Your Brand" really caught my eye. Reading through it, I was struck by how dead-on these tips were for marketing not just to women but to anyone. Take, for example, these EWC tips:

1. Show up in a place she didn’t expect to see you.

2. Set yourself apart from the "other guys"

7. Do more than she expects you to do – give more than she expects to get.

10. Put yourself in a light she’s never seen you in before.

This is very much in the spirit of Seth Godin’s Purple Cow. It’s about being remarkable to your customers. And that’s something you want to do whether they’re men or women. The idea of courtship is a liberating metaphor for building relationships with your customers. It adds a level of invention to what otherwise might seem a formulaic process.
